Courtney Caldwell has joined the ranks of the skepchicks!
By way of support I’m linking all to her first blog post here along with my response to a person in her comment section where the discussion on recent anti-PUA (a spin-off of the MRM) supporter “Alpha Male” Elliot Rodgers has gotten rather heated. For those not in the know, Elliot Rodgers is a self proclaimed “nice guy” who did a video where he wistfully asks women why they can’t see he’s a nice guy… right before he goes out on a killing spree to kill women as retribution for refusing to have sex with him (I kid you not). Tenny said; Tenny, Paul Elam said;
“I’d like to make it the objective for the remainder of this month, and all the Octobers that follow, for men who are being attacked and physically abused by women – to beat the living shit out of them. I don’t mean subdue them, or deliver an open handed pop on the face to get them to settle down. I mean literally to grab them by the hair and smack their face against the wall till the smugness of beating on someone because you know they won’t fight back drains from their nose with a few million red corpuscles. And then make them clean up the mess.”
So he’s not just advocating for responding to violence in self defense. He’s advocating for committing violence beyond that needed to defend oneself. To do egregious damage above and beyond that which is considered legally acceptable. ie; if some woman begins to punch a man ineffectually in the chest in a manner that does no damage, Paul Elam is saying you are justified in responding with sufficient force to break bones, hospitalize and possibly do manslaughter against said woman, and then top that off with a serving of humiliation by exerting the power and dominance that comes from beating someone into submission in a fashion that makes it clear the loser is now your servant or slave. What he is doing is the height of irresponsibility and he should absolutely be held accountable under the law for his words should anyone ever take action due to his advice. So while Courtney might have taken his words a bit out of context, what he said bears so little difference to how she presented it that it’s a fairly forgivable mischaracterization. If Paul was really interested in men’s or women’s rights and seeking to bring and end to domestic abuse, he would be advocating for self defense, not assault. For him to advocate for violent, bloody assault (ostensibly to get hits on his site and gain greater fame and make more money) puts him in a class of human being that I reserve for some of the lowest of the low. We’re talking about a class that I’ve labeled “Persons lower than corpse taint” that includes people who report those who give food to the homeless to the police and toss kittens into the river because they’re inconvenient. Fortunately for Mr. Elam, he will never climb out from behind the wall of supporters he has built to face those who respond to him so that he might defend his words on the equal field of combat that is the halls of debate. If he did, woe to his profit margin!
